New to Tag
New to Tag" is our coaching programme for complete beginners. We try to achieve a relaxed atmosphere to reduce pressure and competitiveness, and encourage the development of basic skills and understanding. The sessions are short, sharp and instructive and will provide you with the tools to develop skills in future leagues.

You should try New to Tag if you:

  • Have little to no team sport background
  • Are unfamiliar with the laws of tag rugby
  • Want to try out the game to see if it's for you
  • Want to get a head-start on the basics before you start playing competitively

Novice
Novice leagues are designed especially for those who have some grounding in tag rugby, or whose sporting background will allow them to learn while playing. We make sure that experienced players and teams don't enter these leagues - so all the teams are learning at the same rate.

NO PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS ARE PERMITTED TO PLAY IN NOVICE LEAGUES.

You should enter a novice league if you:

  • Have some familiarity with the laws of tag rugby, or enough confidence that you can pick it up while playing
  • Have a small amount of experience with team sports
  • Want to join a league at a relatively low standard
  • Want to play with friends who don't have much experience
  • Are running a work team without much collective experience

Social
Mixed social leagues are the most common leagues we currently run. Social teams vary widely in standard, with some venues known to attract stronger teams than others. Social tag is more competitive than novice tag, but still allows for teams to join and develop. We restrict the number of elite teams and players who enter these leagues, but you will have the chance to face more organised opposition than in novice leagues. If a social league was all that was available based on your schedule and availability, a beginner could still enter at this point.

ONLY 3 PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS ALLOWED PLAY ON ANY SOCIAL TEAM OF WHICH ONLY 2 CAN BE INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS.

You should enter a social league if you:

  • Are prepared for a step up in standard from beginner level, but don't want to face elite and experienced teams every week
  • Are running a work team with a few players from a sporting background
  • Have completed a novice or New to Tag programme and are looking for a bit of competition
  • Just want to "dive in"

Division 1
Division 1 is the highest standard of non-elite tag. It is currently played in Irishtown Stadium on a Tuesday and Thursday. Teams who enter these leagues do not have to restrict the number of international and premiership players involved, resulting in highly competitive leagues full of experienced teams. However, not every team that participates is of an elite standard and where possible we try and incorporate grading into the leagues.

NO QUOTAS APPLY

You should enter a Division 1 league if you:

  • Are an experienced player/team, regularly competing for the top prize in social leagues
  • Are quite familiar with the laws of tag
  • Have a good sporting background, either in tag or elsewhere
  • Fancy a challenge

Championship
Championship is our "Premiership Lite" league, which serves as a kind of second division to the year-round Mixed Premiership. The league is played with the elite ITF laws, with 8 players per side. It's intended for teams who are consistently winning social leagues, but feel they need greater familiarity with the laws, tactics and general experience of elite tag. There are some international players involved, but it's limited to 3 per team per night. It's the best way of preparing your team for the step-up to a higher standard.

QUOTA OF MAX 3 INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS ON ANY CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

You should enter the Championship if:

  • You or your team are accustomed to winning social leagues
  • You have a reasonably large squad, as it is recommended to have between 12 and 16 players available every night
  • You are looking to make the step up to Premiership, but want to get a feel for what it's like
  • You have a strong background in team sports

Premiership
Premiership is the highest standard of "club" tag played in Ireland. Teams are made up of players who have represented their region (Dublin, Limerick, Cork) or their country. The league is played with the elite ITF laws, with 8 players per side. It's intended for some of the best teams in the country. Teams are limited to 6 international players per side.

QUOTA OF 6+1 INTERNATIONAL PLAYERS ON ANY PREM TEAM

You should enter the Premiership if:

  • You or your team are accustomed to winning social leagues and have some experience in the team of playing at a high level (e.g. Championship)
  • You have a reasonably large squad, as it is recommended to have between 12 and 16 players available every night
  • You have a very strong background in team sports
